Santa’s Elves Come to the Rescue

St. Bonaventure Students Assist Santa & Mrs. Claus with Holiday Decorations

OLEAN - GOACC needed Santa’s Elves! In a general conversation with Thomas Buttafarro Jr., and Meme Yanetsko, that’s (Santa Elves) what the Chamber needed from SBU!  The St. Bonaventure University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams assisted Santa and Mrs. Claus with checking the holiday decorations.

Head coach Mike Smiechowski brought about 7 team members to the city’s storage facility in north Olean to check all the holiday bulbs on the decorations for the annual Santa Claus Lane celebration. St. Bonaventure’s Director of Government and Community Relations Mr. Buttafarro organized the event.

The decorations all have hundreds of bulbs. Each decoration needs to be plugged in and bulbs checked, replaced or tightened. The decorations include more than 16 cone trees, more than 45 snowflakes, 16 arches and other items.

“Each year, we ask for volunteers to do this work; it’s tedious and is done standing on your feet. We are appreciative of Coach Smiechowski and part of his team for spending two hours with our staff,” stated Meme K. Yanetsko, GOACC COO. GOACC staff will need to string some bulbs on a few of the cone trees and check some additional items, but most of the work was completed.

The City of Olean crew will schedule the decoration placements after Halloween and leaf pick-ups.  The annual Santa Claus Lane Parade is scheduled for Friday, November 24, starting at Delaware Avenue at North Union 6:30pm.
