CCE Cattaraugus Hosting Workshops Throughout October


Ellicottville — CCE Cattaraugus will be hosting workshops throughout the month of October to celebrate New York being the largest producer of table Beets (by acre) in the United States with their 2023 harvest. Growers and producers expect this trend to continue. If you are curious about this new number one status, love to eat beets or want to find out more there are a lot of opportunities to celebrate.

(Ellicottville/ZOOM) October 10th 12:30pm – 1:15pm; Meet Julie Kikkert the Cornell Vegetable Program Team Leader, who will be presenting why, New York is #1 in table beet production (acres); how beets are produced (fun facts); varieties you may see on the market, food processors in our region of NY and an overview of what the Cornell Vegetable Program provides for table beet producers. (Salamanca) October 8th 4pm-6:30pm; Food Fermentation easy and delicious; making pickled beets and onions at the Allegany Community Center in Salamanca.  Hosted by the Seneca Nation of Indians Library registration and more information (716) 945-3157x3405.  Class size limited; please register. (Olean) October 15th     6pm-8pm Pickled Beets Workshop at JCC in Olean. This engaging and hands-on workshop is perfect for anyone interested in learning about canning, with a delicious focus on pickled beets. Beets are not only nutritious but also versatile. When pickled, they offer a unique blend of sweet and tangy flavors, perfect for salads, sandwiches, or as a standalone snack. (Olean) October 22 5pm-6:30 pm Beets! A connection to Cultural Roots of Eastern Europe trial gardens.  Come learn about CCE participation in Vegetable Variety Trial Garden and the 2024 Demonstration Garden results. During the workshop there will be a presentation of how to prepare Beet Winter Salad or Russian Vinaigrette. (Randolph) October 19th 10am. Does your kid enjoy new and interesting crafts? We will be making cards using fall harvest prints (including using beets!). Contact the Randolph Free Library (716) 358-3712 to participate in this free event.  Class size is limited.

The Olean City School District will be introducing students to beets through their Farm to School and Cafeteria programs have named beets their harvest of the month food for their district. They will hold tasting opportunities for their Elementary and High Schools students throughout the month.

The Cornell Vegetable Program is A partnership between Cornell University and the CCE Associations in these fourteen counties: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Monroe, Niagara, Ontario, Orleans, Oswego, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne & Yates.
