ELLICOTTVILLE - The Bob McCarthy Foundation sponsored a Summer Learning Camp for ECS students. Over the past six weeks, 24 of our community’s bright young learners attended sessions with Mrs. Leah Farnum at the Ellicottville Memorial Library. While in session, students worked diligently to maintain their skills learned during the school year pertaining to reading and math. Each week students worked collaboratively to solve a science and engineering task, putting their problem-solving skills to the test - like utilizing comprehension strategies, building an endangered animal enclosure and working on their reading and grammar skills.
Some examples include:
During rotations, students practiced grammar and reading skills by playing games and working on the Osmo.
Students learned about solar powered vehicles and utilizing comprehension strategies.
After reading the true story of Ivan the gorilla who was kept in a shopping mall, students designed and built an enclosure for an endangered animal that would meet all of Ivan the gorilla’s needs. Students worked collaboratively and had to listen to each other’s ideas to execute this project.
Students also learned how to code.
This was a wonderful opportunity for students to keep their reading and math muscles working over the summer break. This empowered group of kiddos are now ready to face the challenges of a new school year in a few short weeks. Many thanks to Laura and the Ellicottville Memorial Library for hosting and the Bob McCarthy Foundation for funding this opportunity and continuing to support our community by putting our youth first! Thanks to Leah for making this a great interactive summer activity.
