Celebration of the Arts Honors Local Artist

Among festivities at the Tri-County Arts Council’s 2021 Celebration of the Arts! will be the presentation of the Tom Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award to local artist Peg Bothner.  The public is invited to attend the fun annual event which will also include live music by the Sticktights from 2:00-6:00pm on Sunday, Sept. 19th in the Woodside Tavern on the Range, 3319 West River Rd., Olean.

“We are honored to present the award to Peg Bothner who is a distinguished and talented artist in Olean,” Mikel Wintermantel, executive director of the Tri-County Arts Council said.

Bothner’s watercolors, mixed media, and charcoal sketches were recently on exhibit in the Arts Council gallery. As in all her many portraits and watercolors of individuals, animals, and dancers, her drawings abound with a lively joy and spontaneity, her work reveals a unique and sophisticated style.

Her art has hung in galleries and museums throughout Western New York including the Albright-Knox in Buffalo. She studied with watercolorist Robert Blair who was director of the Olean Art Association and Catherine Nelson of Alfred University.

In 1992, she was commissioned by Cutco to draw scenes of the company’s factory and office. The project resulted in 15 charcoal, pencil and watercolor pieces which are on display in the OBDC building, 301 N. Union St., Olean.

The Thomas Barnes Lifetime Achievement award is named after long-time Arts Council board president. It celebrates the career of an individual artist, organization, an individual at an organization who, among other distinctions, has demonstrated a particular commitment to his or her work throughout a long career and has made important contributions regionally, nationally, or internationally in his or her field.

In addition to live music by the Sticktights, the 2021 Celebration of the Arts! will hold a Pig Roast and begin a raffle with a chance to win art by Mikel Wintermantel, Peter Jones, Glenn Zweygardt and Barbara Fox. The Drawing will be Oct 8th at 5:00pm. Chances for the raffle are available now on the TCAC website.

“This year's Celebration of the Arts is less formal and way more fun!” Wintermantel said.
