Look into Dana’s Heating and Plumbing
Planning to attend a wedding or two this summer and wondering whether to write the happy couple a check or buy them a new blender? For one couple, Dana and Misty Ukolowicz, the money they received as wedding gifts is what enabled them to start their own business, Dana’s Heating and Plumbing. Now, almost 10 years later, the Ukolowiczs’ business has grown to serve customers all over the Ellicottville area, from East Randolph to Franklinville. So why not write a check? You might just help someone’s entrepreneurial dream become a reality!
Born and raised in Salamanca, Dana Ukolowicz completed the HVAC program at YTI Career Institute in York, Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, he began working for C.R. Powers Heating & Air Conditioning in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where Misty is from. When a hunting accident forced Dana to take a leave from work, he visited his hometown and began thinking about relocating. “Dana said he always wanted to move back home,” Misty noted. “He brought me up here, and I loved it - I said I never wanted to go back. We ended up moving here!”
While Dana worked for a local heating and plumbing company for a short time, the couple’s ultimate goal was to own their own business. “We got married and used the cash from the wedding to start the business,” Misty explained. In addition to Dana and Misty, the company includes another employee. The Ukolowiczs are also open to working with students in vocational programs. “If anyone is looking into getting a bit of experience, we’d be willing to work with them,” said Misty.
While the business name includes “heating and plumbing,” Dana’s work includes so much more. Misty explained, “We do heating, air-conditioning, electrical, plumbing, installations of full furnaces, air conditioners, mini splits, baseboard heaters, boilers, and septic tanks. We also do all of your water fixtures, drains, repairing and installing toilets and new lines.” Currently, many of the calls Misty receives are for air conditioning checks due to the recent heat wave. “Right now, we’re doing lots of air-conditioning checks, just to make sure everything is up and running and there’s enough refrigeration to cool the air,” she explained. “We always encourage people to call as early as possible when the weather changes so that we can get them on the schedule and allow time to order any parts that might be needed.”
For the Ukolowiczs, the best part of owning their own business is the flexibility and ability to make their own schedules, as well as the sense of community with their customers. “It’s nice meeting other people and talking and getting to know our customers,” said Misty.
