Leaves are falling, autumn is calling. As some will grab their cardigan sweaters, many sip their pumpkin spice lattes, while others will sport flannels. The destination is the same: getting outside and appreciating nature’s show. Many say they just feel better in the forest. Some go to get inspired, others go to clear their mind and a few contemplate the deep questions, such as… If money really did grow on trees, is everyone’s favorite season fall? McKean County, PA, known as PA’s Trail Central, would tell you more autumn jokes, but you wouldn’t fall for them. (This gets better, we promise!)
Autumn Adventures in the Forest
As Pennsylvania's only National Forest, the Allegheny National Forest offers a breathtaking backdrop to experience the vibrant fall foliage, showcasing stunning shades of ruby red, brilliant orange, and shimmering gold. The color transformation typically begins in early October at the higher elevations of the Kinzua Sky Walk in Kinzua Bridge State Park, reaching its peak from mid to late-October along the Longhouse National Scenic Byway, which hugs the shores of the Allegheny Reservoir.
Spectacular Fall Foliage Viewing Spots
The top destination for leaf peeping is the Kinzua Sky Walk, celebrated by Culture Trip U.K. as “One of the Top 10 Most Scenic Skywalks in the World.” Extending 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge at a height of 225 feet, it features a partial glass floor at the end, offering awe-inspiring views.
Plan to hike the Kinzua Valley Trail for an up-close look at the towering steel structures. Afterward, enjoy a picnic in the park, followed by a hike or bike ride on the Knox & Kane Rail Trail, which was honored as the “2023 Pennsylvania Trail of the Year.” You can also explore the history of the skywalk at the modern interpretive building at the Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center. The park and skywalk are open from 8:00am until dusk, while the Visitor Center operates from 8:00am-6:00pm. Leashed dogs are welcome in the park but only service animals are allowed inside the Visitor Center. The park is located at 296 Viaduct Road, Mt. Jewett, PA. Entry into the park is FREE!
Nearby dining options include the delightful Swedish eatery, Kaffe Sol, for breakfast and lunch in Mt. Jewett. For accommodations in Mt. Jewett and Lantz Corners, consider The Post on Main, an Airbnb, or High Pines RV Park, which offers camping and cabins. Lantz Corners Getaway features lodging, bike rentals, and is a short walk to the Barrel House Restaurant. In Kane, enjoy the renowned Texas Hot Lunch/4 Sons Restaurant or farm-to-table fare at Table 105. Kane also boasts several wineries, distilleries, and breweries. Visit Logyard Brewery, Flickerwood Winery and Cocktail Lounge, CJ Spirits, and Wilds Sonshine Factory for locally crafted beverages.
Scenic Overlooks in Allegheny National Forest
The Longhouse National Scenic Byway winds around the Allegheny Reservoir, providing a 27-mile route with three designated scenic overlooks for viewing the stunning autumn landscape. Notable spots include Rimrock Overlook, Kinzua Point, and Jakes Rocks. In addition to scenic drives, the Forest features an extensive network of hiking trails. Depending on the weather, kayaking offers a unique perspective for enjoying the fall colors.
Rimrock Overlook features a picnic area and trails leading through the forest to magnificent rock formations with sweeping views of the fall foliage. You can access Rimrock Trail from the overlook, which includes stone steps carved into the rocks, ultimately leading to the shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir. The 1.3-mile trail is rated easy to moderate, but returning to the overlook requires some effort due to its steep incline. Be sure to carry water and wear sturdy hiking boots if you decide to explore this trail. Rimrock Overlook is located along PA Route 59, about 19 miles from Bradford, with a large sign marking the turnoff. Drive 2.7 miles into the forest to reach the parking and picnic area.
Kinzua Point, situated along PA Route 59 west of Rimrock Overlook, features a well-developed overlook with ample parking. From here, you can admire miles of colorful shoreline, beautifully reflected in the waters of the Allegheny Reservoir.
Jakes Rocks offers scenic overlooks, a short hiking trail, and some of the best mountain biking trails in the Forest. To reach Jakes Rocks, head south from Kinzua Point along the Longhouse National Scenic Byway, following signs for the overlook and turning onto Forest Road 492. It's about a mile to the trailhead parking. The first lot is for mountain bikers; parking for the overlook is further down. At the overlook, stand on the expansive rock outcrop to take in views of Jackson Bay on the Allegheny Reservoir, Kinzua Dam, and the surrounding forest, where you’ll find a fascinating mix of trees growing through and atop massive boulders. The overlook is about a half-mile hike from the parking area.
