Allegheny National Forest Region
Looking for a refreshing escape into nature? Imagine a place where your senses awaken to the beauty of the forest, your heart slows, and you're wrapped in a soothing sense of wonder. If that’s what you’re craving, then a trip to the Allegheny National Forest Region is exactly what you need. With over 513,000 acres in northwestern Pennsylvania, the Allegheny National Forest invites you to explore four seasons of premier outdoor adventure. Enjoy charming small towns, exhilarating attractions like the renowned Kinzua Sky Walk, and a variety of other memorable experiences.
FISH ON A SPEAR
The region surrounding Kinzua is filled with breathtaking attractions named after this Native American term for “Fish on a Spear.” From the Kinzua Sky Walk and Kinzua Bridge State Park to the Kinzua Gorge and Creek, you’ll encounter the wonders of this area as you explore McKean and Warren counties in Pennsylvania.
A must-see is the Kinzua Sky Walk, recognized as one of the “top 10 most scenic skywalks in the world” by Culture Trip, U.K. This engineering marvel offers sweeping views of the Kinzua Gorge, standing as a fusion of nature’s beauty and human ingenuity. Originally built in 1882 as the world’s longest and highest railroad viaduct, it was rebuilt with steel in 1900 to transport timber, oil, and coal. After a tornado destroyed part of the viaduct in 2003, the remaining towers were transformed into the skywalk. Today, visitors can experience the thrill of walking above the gorge, complete with a glass-floored overlook and panoramic views - especially stunning during fall when the forest bursts into vibrant colors.
If you're up for more adventure, the Kinzua Creek Trail allows hikers to descend into the gorge, where the fallen towers rest as a tribute to nature’s power. At the Kinzua Bridge Visitors Center, you’ll find exhibits on the engineers who built the viaduct and learn about the area’s wildlife.
The Kinzua Sky Walk and Kinzua Bridge State Park are open daily, offering free admission to all visitors. Make sure to visit the Skywalk before November 19th as it will be closed until August 2025. The Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitors Center will remain open.

Birders will love the Timberdoodle Flats Interpretive Trail, while backpackers can enjoy a true wilderness experience on the 96.6-mile stretch of the North Country National Scenic Trail.
The award-winning Knox & Kane Rail Trail is a family-friendly route that connects the Kinzua Bridge State Park to surrounding communities, offering interpretive signage, public art, and a smooth path for biking, hiking, or snowmobiling.
