The Food Bank of Ellicottville
Adjusting to this ‘new normal’ due to COVID-19 has been difficult for many in the greater Ellicottville area. The Food Bank of Ellicottville, powered by Community Action, wants you to know they are here for you. “Do not worry about groceries and basic personal care items, we can provide that,” Nancy Rogan, volunteer, told me. So here are the facts …
• Location: United Church of Ellicottville located on the corner of Elk and Elizabeth in the Village.
• Hours: Monday 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., Wednesday 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m - noon.
• Requirements: If you need temporary access to the food and products available, there are no requirements. All you will need to provide is an identification card, i.e. driver’s license upon pickup. Keep in mind, no record is taken of your identification card. If you are looking to become a long-term client, there is minor paperwork and the threshold to qualify is fairly high considering the socio-economic picture in this rural area. Thus meaning most people would qualify. You are allowed two orders per month.
• Procedure: In light of COVID-19, the pantry is taking extra precaution. You are to park, walk up to the door and a volunteer will hand you an order form. After filling it out you will back your car up to the ramp and another volunteer will load you up. Volunteers do not physically touch the inventory.
Now onto what is available and let me tell you, I was blown away at the expansive list. Some items are only available once a month and some two times per month. They have everything from meat such as chicken, ground beef and pork. Fruits, veggies and baked goods are readily available. You can even get dish soap, laundry detergent, deodorant, toothpaste and so much more. In the classic perception of a food bank, there are items such as pasta, sauces, beans, rice, saltines and other canned goods. If you have an emergency and need food but cannot make the times listed above, call Nancy or Val, 716-699-2900 or 716-699-2852, respectively.
Moral of the story: if you are caught between buying nutritional food or paying rent and utilities … pay the bill and use the resource we are so fortunate to have in our backyard. Leaving you with another quote from Nancy: “If you find yourself unemployed during this time, please think of us.”
Hello, World!
