Frozen Pipes Dos and Don’ts
Although it may seem that we are nearing the end of our frigid temperatures here in WNY, let’s not forget we still have a ways to go! Daytime temperatures are typically where we see an increase of warmth this time of year, but once that sun goes down, we still tend to see the temps drop below freezing.
With our deceiving daytime temperatures and the season of spring closing in on us, we understand why some people may not see the need to take preventive measures to keep their pipes from freezing. However, there is no controlling the weather and as it goes, better to play it safe than be sorry. We spoke with Ellen Fenton & Company (EFC), a local insurance agency here in the village of Ellicottville, for some insight because who wants to deal with a busted pipe due to frigid temps that may result in over $5,000 in damage?
We learned that there are some simple ways you can keep water flowing through your pipes. The most common preventive measure is allowing your faucets to drip cold water. The movement of water makes it more difficult to freeze. EFC also encourages you to keep your thermostat set at the same temperature throughout the day and night. Preferably above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Although that seems a bit chilly for most, we all have that one friend who wears shorts in single digit weather and always has the fan on.
In the event that your pipes do end up freezing and you are not an experience DIY-er, it is always a good idea to get a professional involved. If there is no time for that, please know that you should NEVER attempt to thaw your pipes using a propane or kerosene heater, blow torch, charcoal stove, or any other type of open flame. EFC said the goal is to thaw your pipes, not set your house on fire! Wrapping an electric heating pad around the frozen section of pipe or using a blow dryer will provide a temporary fix. While attempting to thaw out the frozen section of pipe, you will want to keep your faucet open to allow water and steam to discharge.
EFC reported that they oftentimes get questions on this topic over the course of the winter months and invites anyone who has questions on their current coverages to give them a call.
