Mad Crazy Batter

Bakery marking one year anniversary with free cake and a visit from Santa

The Mad Crazy Batter Bakery in Great Valley is celebrating their first year in business. Rachael Ferguson, co-owner, told me, “Our first year open has been great! We have learned so much!” Through trial and error they seem to have a pulse on what clients in the area like, and what they don't like. “We have also grown in our baking skills this year and it's been a lot of fun!”

Ferguson has been baking with her business partner, Dawn Rowland, for about five years now.  “We just get each other when it comes to baking.” Each having unique talents; this dynamic duo works well together, playing off each other’s strengths. “We have taught each other a lot just in this past year.”

This teamwork, comprised of two talented bakers with small business experience joining forces to make a go at it, is awe inspiring. “We both had previous bakeries and we’re glad we are in it together this time,” said Ferguson. Their most popular items: cinnamon rolls and sugar cookies. (Yes, please!) Ferguson admits that she has had a hard time keeping up with the sugar cookie demand. “People would buy the entire tray once I put them out.” Their cinnamon rolls are gooey and full of cinnamon … If you haven't tried one, you seriously need to … trust me! As someone who hasn’t had gluten since 2009, it looked like wonderland dreams come true. On that note, they do have gluten free products upon special order.

With little over one month left until the calendar turns a new year, Ferguson filled me in on 2022 and what is to come. There are a few ideas percolating … “We would love to start making our own ice cream to sell by the pint, maybe fresh lemonade in the summer. We also want to add a picnic table outside and a grab-n-go area out front.”

FUN FACTS WITH RACHEL FERGUSON:

eNOW: How did you get your name?

RACHAEL: Dawn and I had been brainstorming on a name for awhile and we couldn't really think of anything and I just love anything Disney. Dawn came up with the name randomly and then we started thinking about all the different Alice things we could do and it just grew from there.

eNOW: Favorite cake flavor?

RACHAEL: My favorite is Spice cake. It makes me think of fall all year round. Dawn’s favorite cake is pineapple upside down cake!

eNOW: Favorite dessert to make?

RACHAEL: Trying to decide on what my favorite dessert to make is hard! Ha! Probably cookies. There are SO many different flavors you can do. I love biscotti and the process in making it. I also love drop cookies and what I can do with them. Dawn’s favorite dessert to make is cupcakes, and how you can decorate them in all different ways and colors.

This wouldn’t be an article if I didn’t sneak in a fun fact about baking. In 2018 the oldest piece of bread was found in Jordan. Commonly history felt bread making evolved during the times of ancient Greece, but this discovery challenges that notion. Andreas Heiss of the Austrian Academy of Science claims, ”It tells us that our ancestors were smart people who knew how to use their environment well. It also tells us that processing food is a much more basic technique in human history than we thought - maybe as old as hunting and gathering.”

What a cool notion to ponder. From what I hear and what popular baking shows teach me, baking is a tedious near inexplicable art that the Mad Crazy Batter Bakers seem to grab the essence of, making their Alice in Wonderland theme rather fitting.
