January is an important month in Ellicottville, and in mountain resort towns everywhere… It’s Learn a Snowsport month! We know that our resorts offer world-class instruction no matter the month of the winter season, but this is time dedicated to teaching the next generation and interested individuals of all ages how to ski or snowboard. HoliMont is eager to play a part in the nationwide initiuative and has been offering pass and rental deals since the month started. Until January 17th, purchasers of a full-price weekday pass get rentals and lessons at no additional charge to celebrate the next crop of winter athletes. January 17th is this Friday! So drop whatever it is you had planned and make your reservation stat!

Travis Widger, the Snowsport Director at HoliMont is very excited about the month of January. Aside from Learn a Snowsport month, Travis says January is the first full month that Western New Yorkers get to ski and ride. “We are welcoming our whole family as the HoliMont members return to Ellicottville and their winter homes,” he added. As far as goals, Travis’s are very simple but important: ski, make snow, and welcome the new year. I’m sure if I owned a snow gun, that would be my list exactly!

Learning to ski or snowboard is just the tip of the iceberg. The next couple of months are packed with events at HoliMont. Here are a few other activities the club has in store…

Ladies Day is January 24th, a day when the women of HoliMont (and their guests) enjoy a high level of fun and camaraderie at the club. This year’s theme is “Après Like You Are In St. Moritz”, probably the most iconic Swiss Alps town in all of Europe! When you think about the Alps, you’re probably thinking of St. Moritz. Who doesn’t want an excuse to dress up for that

Ladies, break out the furs! To complete the theme, Dinas at The Mont will be serving up Swiss-inspired cuisine. Your event ticket also includes four drink vouchers. Ladies will also enjoy a DJ and live music. Event tickets can be purchased online for $165. And gentlemen, don’t fret, your day comes soon after in February. Sit tight!

HoliMont rallies the freestyle community with its inaugural “Who Poutine In The Park, A Park Event” on Saturday, January 25th. Although HoliMont is typically open to only members on weekends, this special event welcomes the public to participate! A jam-style format invites snowboarders and free skiers to come together to shred the main park on Snowbird and celebrate the freestyle movement. Entry fee is $65 for non-members, $25 for HoliMont members, and includes a voucher for a free Poutine from Dina’s at The Mont, plus giveaways from many of the area’s ski/snowboard and outdoor shops including The Boardroom, The City Garage, Mud, Sweat n’ Gears, Jamestown Skate Products, Phatman Boardshop, Daily City Train Skate Shop, Flour City, Neon Wave, Loud Performance, and Snowflake 245.

“Freestyle is its own culture and following, and is a great aspect of skiing and riding where athletes can show their skills and their style,” said Travis. For additional details and registration, go to holimont.com/events.

Oftentimes the special events hosted by HoliMont aim to honor important people or groups within the community. One unique event taking place is Contractors Day, January 31st. Dinas at The Mont will be catering the event, which is in its 45th year running, according to Travis. “We will always need these skilled men and women, and they work day in and day out, weekends, nights, and holidays so our heat is on, roofs are dry, homes are warm, roads are clear, and more,” he said. The signature Bombardier Ball Drop is a staple at the Contractor’s Day event. Numbered tennis balls are purchased for charity and then dropped off of the Exhibition chairlift, earning prizes for a few lucky winners.

HoliMont is working daily to make sure that our winters are more than just a season, but a celebration. Whether you’re carving your first turn or fleshing out your coolest trick in preparation for Who Poutine In The Park, there’s fun to be had. It’s been a fantastic January so far, but the best is yet to come! More information can be found at holimont.com/events, or on their Facebook and Instagram.
