The City Garage & Matchstick Productions partner up for movie night at The Depot
Ellicottville’s funkiest ski shop, The City Garage, looks to host its annual movie premier this Saturday, November 5. This year they are featuring “Anywhere From Here,” a new ski movie by Matchstick Productions.
"We have partnered with Matchstick Productions for so many years because they are still creating binge-worthy ski films year after year,” Trey Clauss of The City Garage tells me. And he admits that this one “is the best one yet!”
Anywhere From Here follows the sport of skiing through the eyes of 12-year-old skiing phenom, Walker Woodring, and the concept of ‘Do you ever wonder where you’re going to end up?’
Surrounded by industry pros including Sam Kuch, Tonje Kvivik, Eric Hjorleifson and Emily Childs, Walker shares his experience as a kid who just wants to play and doesn’t have to ponder “real life” quite yet. This movie features stellar ski sessions from stunning backdrops like Absolut Park, Austria, Golden Alpine Holidays, BC and Mt. Hood, Oregon, just to name a few.
Matchstick was recently awarded Ski Film of the year from IF3 (International Freeski Film Festival) hosted in Whistler, BC. When asked why Matchstick, Trey stated, “We want to bring the best of the best to Ellicottville and Matchstick has always produced!”
Speaking of the best of the best, the prizes at The City Garage movie premier event are always top notch. “We will have a bunch of ski swag for the raffle AND you can’t forget the Turkey for thanksgiving dinner! Skis will be on the docket for the main event raffle - one chance to win for $20!”
The premier will once again be hosted by the infamous Depot Restaurant in Ellicottville. Tucked at the foot of Holiday Valley, they have seen it all over the years. The quintessential ‘ski bar’, Trey states, “The Depot embodies the soul of skiing. Young and old come out to see… everyone has a great time!” My, how this fits the theme of this year’s movie! As you age in the industry every facet provides an entirely new set of experiences, thrills, challenges and rewards.
This event truly kicks off the snow season here in Ellicottville. “I can think back over the years of being a young skier and this time of year - the excitement, anticipation, seeing my winter ski friends - having the movie night is totally part of all of those feels,” Trey told me. “To me, skiing is a lot more than just the act; it’s the people and the stories you get to tell. Having that story projected from Matchstick Productions on the big screen and then turning it to the crowd that is there - everyone is making their mark in the ski community and hopefully people will leave the party with another story to tell!”
Trey reminds us to “watch the weather for Nov. 5… “If we get a clear window, there will be a big screen on the front deck of The Depot as well as the main screen inside! Show will start at 7:00pm. Let’s Kick Off Winter!”
