Mayor discusses opportunity for award through NYCOM; Ellicottville offers to host NYCOM 2025 Workshop

The Village Board of Ellicottville, NY gathered for their first meeting of the new year on January 21, 2025. As Mayor John Burrell called the evening to order, discussions began surrounding the current month’s agenda as well as keeping up with the previous year’s projects.

Starting off the new year with some good news, it was announced by the Board that the Village of Ellicottville is working toward a submission regarding the Local Government Achievement Award through NYCOM. The award shines light on inter-municipal corporations and they are looking to see innovations made by NYCOM Member cities and villages that have improved the quality of life within the area, provided cost savings, created partnerships, used unique or new approaches to issues, as well as streamlined delivery of services.

The recently completed Elizabeth Street Project and newly constructed Mill Street Parking Lot will be used to highlight the Village’s use of their resources, innovation, and connections. The Mayor, Amy Hayward (Village Clerk), and Barton & Loguidice are all working together to submit a final application by April 15, 2025. The winners of the award will be announced at NYCOM’s 116th Annual Meeting in late May of this year.

Speaking of spring, Ellicottville has offered to host the NYCOM WNY Regional Legislative Workshop for the year 2025. Barton & Loguidice has offered their sponsorship for the event, and it’s believed to bring in an estimated 150+ visitors to the area. The workshop offers to connect municipalities together with the chance to learn and grow through various departments.

NYCOM, New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials, continues to host beneficial meetings throughout the year that range in topics. The mayor mentioned in his monthly report a request to attend two upcoming conferences. The conferences include the NYCOM Legislative Meeting February 2nd-4th in Albany, NY, and the NYCOM 116th Annual Meeting held May 27-30th in Bolton Landing, NY. The mayor’s report was accepted by the Village Board.

Also approved by the Board were the financial reports for December 2024, as well as the Audit of Claims. The previous month’s Board meeting held December 17, 2024 also had their minutes approved and will be made available online for the public to view at www.ellicottvillegov.com under the Village of Ellicottville Minutes & Agendas.

The Special Events committee made a request for the approval of the annual Mardi Gras Celebrations held in the village. This yearly tradition includes weekend festivities for locals and visitors alike with live entertainment and fun activities throughout the village and town. The village will host their costume party and highly anticipated Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday, March 8, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates on this event’s scheduling.

Village Clerk, Amy Hayward, submitted to the Board the review and approval of various policies and emergency acts. Included for the Village, an Employee Response to Emergency, Village Vehicle Use Policy for Emergency, and Fund Balance Policy. These documents are to be reviewed and used toward future needs of the Village to assist in urgent and financial situations as necessary.

In Old Business, Ben Gross, head of the Engineering Department Head, has been added to the EVC Portal to better assist electrical vehicle chargers that may be experiencing any issues. This will greatly benefit a more immediate response from the Village when needed and allow for more positive experiences through users. Ellicottville, NY, has received a large amount of praise from National Grid on their use of EVC (Electrical Vehicle Chargers) in the new Mill Street Parking Lot and have used the Village as a shining example to outside municipal regions.

As discussions came to a close, the Village Board Meeting of January 2025 was called to adjourn. The Board will continue to hold their monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of each month.
