Here at Trail Central, as summer approaches, we receive daily phone calls, emails and direct messages on our social media channels wanting advice on the best ways to enjoy hiking, biking and mountain biking in and around the Allegheny National Forest. Hiking is the ultimate way to multitask. You get some exercise, enjoy nature, and completely ignore your problems. Let’s jump in…
TRAIL CENTRAL
Known as Trail Central, McKean County has an expansive trail system for hiking and biking. Find your own trail on over 600 miles of trails in in the Allegheny National Forest region and 21 trails throughout McKean County. Whether you're seeking a leisurely stroll or a challenging trek, you’ll connect with nature and explore the stunning landscapes. Hiking trails in the Allegheny National Forest and McKean County are serene and immersive experiences in nature, with opportunities to enjoy the sounds of more than 250 species of birds including the American Bald Eagle, the Scarlet Tanager and the Tufted Titmouse.
According to Trail Central’s resident birding expert, Debbie D., her pro tip for experiencing optimal bird watching opportunities, is to venture out either early in the morning or just before sunset, to the Marilla Reservoir Trail off of Route 346, west of Bradford. Here are a few of Trail Central’s favorite hiking trails:
Rimrock Overlook
The Rimrock Overlook Trail in the Allegheny National Forest offers a scenic hiking experience through the rugged terrain of northwestern Pennsylvania. Located near the town of Warren, this trail provides visitors with stunning views of the Allegheny River valley and surrounding forested hills. The trailhead is typically accessed from the Rimrock Recreation Area, which offers picnic facilities, restrooms, and parking. It features a variety of challenges, from the gentler Tuttletown and Coal Knob trails to the epic one-way Blacksnake gravity trail. Marilla Bridges Trail

Kinzua Sky Walk and Kinzua Creek Trail
For those unafraid of heights, the Kinzua Sky Walk extends 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge, standing 225 feet above the ground. Featuring a partial glass floor, it offers breathtaking views of Kinzua Creek, the forest-covered gorge, and the 2003 tornado-scattered ruins of 11 of the original viaduct towers.
The Kinzua Creek Trail in Kinzua Bridge State Park winds down the steep side of the gorge for nearly half mile. Access this picturesque trail between the Kinzua Bridge Skywalk and the overlook. This trail offers upclose views of the original steel towers toppled. This trail is difficult due to elevation. Recommended to call Trail Central for a motivational pep talk.
The skywalk, a reinvention of the historic Kinzua Viaduct, is highlighted in the interpretive displays at the Kinzua Bridge State Park’s Visitors Center. The dog-friendly park also offers three trails: the family-friendly General Kane Trail, the Knox & Kane Rail Trail for hiking and biking, and the challenging Kinzua Creek Trail.

In 1881, the Bradford Oil Field produced an incredible 83% of the United States’ total oil output; over 90,000 wells were drilled here. Located in northwestern Pennsylvania in McKean County, the oil comes from the upper Devonian Bradford Sands. Light golden amber to a deep mossy green in color, the “Miracle Molecule” from the Bradford field is high in paraffin and is considered one of the highest grade natural lubricant crude oils in the world.
The Penn Brad Oil Museum preserves the philosophy and spirit of a historic oil community. You will experience the boom times of the world’s first billion dollar oil field. Tour an oil lease house, then plan a walking tour along the nearby Main Street of Bradford’s National Historic District to view the eclectic architecture of the community built by the Oil Barons during the early 1900’s.
