Another successful summer reading program comes to a close

ELLICOTTVILLE - The Ellicottville Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program has come to a close, but hopefully the fun memories will remain. We had 96 kids who participated in the program; the theme this year was “Adventure Begins at Your Library”.

A special thanks to the Bob McCarthy Foundation for providing funding to the library to hire a summer intern for the past 13 years. This year’s intern, Cameron Kaleta, did an amazing job for us this summer creating programs and activities, as well as contests, puzzles and minute-to-win it games for the kids.

Each year the kids are asked to read a minimum of 15 minutes a day for five weeks. Each week, depending on the minutes read, the kids get tickets to try and win some awesome prizes. This year’s prizes included a tent, a fishing pole, Legos, a soccer ball, Sky High passes, a stomp rocket, a sand kit and more. We also had weekly programs based on the week’s individual themes such as make your own terrarium made possible by the Elisa B. Hughey Foundation, wilderness survival instruction, sand art and a yoga class, to name a few.  All the kids who completed the entire five weeks got to select a book of their choice which they could take home and keep.

This summer at the library was definitely full of adventure and we are so grateful to everyone who helped to make it a success. Can’t wait for next year and a new theme - “Color Our World”!
