Spring in the Enchanted Mountains
Spring in Western New York is a Season of Renewal & Adventure
As the chill of winter melts away, Cattaraugus County bursts into a vibrant tapestry of colors, sounds, and activities. Spring brings a renewed sense of adventure, inviting residents and visitors alike to step outside and explore the natural beauty and community spirit that defines this region. From outdoor recreation to seasonal festivals, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as the days grow longer and the temperatures rise.
One of the most cherished pastimes during spring is hiking on the myriad of trails that wind through the picturesque landscape. Twelve percent of the county is state and county lands, giving hikers a large area to explore! Allegany State Park, New York's largest state park, features over 65 miles of hiking trails. The park is renowned for its scenic beauty, characterized by lush forests, tranquil streams, and rolling hills. The park also caters to more outdoor activities like biking, swimming, kayaking, fishing, or even horseback riding.
Challenge yourself along mountain biking trails. The largest trail system in the Enchanted Mountains is the McCarty Hill State Forest between Holiday Valley Resort and HoliMont. Bicyclists can also find their haven here. The county boasts several bike paths making it perfect for family outings or strenuous rides. The Pat McGee Trail offers 12.4 miles of scenic views. If you want a paved path, Allegheny River Valley Trail offers 6.2 miles along the Allegheny River.
As the ice recedes from local lakes and streams, fishing enthusiasts are eager to cast their lines in the water. With ample opportunities for trout fishing in the spring months, popular spots include the Cattaraugus Creek and the numerous lakes dotted along the landscape. The county’s reputation for excellent fishing is well-deserved, and many local bait shops are ready to help anglers prepare for a successful outing.
In addition to fishing, the county’s lakes and rivers offer other water activities. Kayaking, canoeing and white-water rafting become increasingly popular as warmer weather approaches. Embark on a paddling expedition along the 50-mile stretch of the Allegheny River coursing through our picturesque mountains. Grab our Paddle the Allegheny River Rack Card for launch points and distances, some of which are accessible to everyone. Plan ahead and visit EMFun.us/Paddle for more details.

Experience a Simpler Way of Life along New York’s Amish Trail. This is not your typical Amish community; there is no commercialization here like you find in the larger familiar Amish areas in the Northeast. When you "get lost" on New York's Amish Trail, you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful scenery in a peaceful atmosphere that will have you revisit life at a slower pace. Follow hand-painted signs down the side roads to the Amish businesses where you can purchase a wide variety of goods, each made with incomparable hand craftsmanship. For more information, visit www.AmishTrail.com, or pick up a free Amish Trail brochure and map at sponsoring businesses and visitors’ centers.
Families can enjoy countless activities throughout spring. Local parks and recreational centers provide excellent facilities for picnics, playgrounds, and sports. The Cattaraugus County Parks offer beautiful settings for family gatherings, complete with hiking trails and open areas for flying kites or enjoying a game of frisbee and even disc golf.
