Local couple open up shop to share their knowledge of cannabis and its benefits

As the legalization of recreational marijuana and its licensing regulations make their way through communities across New York state, those with a deep passion for cannabis are stepping forward to shed light on the plant and its benefits. Some are even making preparations to open up shop. One couple, just a stone’s throw from Ellicottville, already has.

JD Newark and his wife, Christa, are the operators of EVL Cannabis Club & Dispensary, located on Main Street in Salamanca.  An enrolled member of the Seneca Nation, JD is proud to call this slice of western New York home, and he harbors a deep appreciation for the outdoors and for his family.  “I’m a family man, “ he said.  “My family is everything to me. I’m married to my long-time crush, and we’re excited to be working together to educate the public on cannabis use and offer a variety of products that can help people in so many different ways.”

After visiting their retail location and chatting with the pair, it is evident that JD and Christa have found their calling…

PERKS: Why cannabis?

NEWARK: Cannabis is not only my medicine, it’s also my hobby.  It’s always been fascinating to me how versatile cannabis can be.  New uses of cannabis are discovered daily.  There are so many great things that come from this plant.

PERKS: What are some common misconceptions about it?

NEWARK: That it’s dangerous or that it’s a gateway drug. We’re hopping to change that view and perception and bring a positive welcoming face to cannabis.

PERKS: What can customers expect to find in your store?

NEWARK: We carry everything from cannabis flower to concentrates, edibles, cartridges, drinks, drink mixes, THC capsules and more.  The flower and hash we carry are all locally grown and locally manufactured.  We’ve developed some really great relationships with reputable cannabis companies and it’s important to us that we maintain that local connection to support each other.  We also have a large selection of pipes, bongs and other specialty items.

PERKS: What are your most popular products right now?

NEWARK: Right now, our infused edibles are a big hit - everything from gummies to chocolates to baked goods.  And our top shelf flower is an exotic line that our customers are really into.

PERKS: What is your favorite way to consume cannabis?

NEWARK: Flower has always been my go-to, but I love cannabis in all forms!

PERKS: Cannabis can be enjoyed recreationally, but its uses for its medicinal properties has been around for thousands of years. Can you give us some insight on what ailments it can help with?

NEWARK: Chronic pain, anxiety, and trouble sleeping are what we see people using cannabis for the most.  It’s amazing that we can help so many people without prescription drugs.  THC is known to interact with areas of the brain that can decrease nausea and promote appetite.  We see it a lot with cancer patients who are struggling with the side effects of their chemotherapy.  We want people to know there’s a better way to medicate - all natural, safe, quality products. We carry ultra low dose THC infused-edibles for those looking to micro-dose or who want to try cannabis for the first time but don’t want to feel “high". The gummies are our #1 seller for insomnia and anxiety.  It’s an easy way to take your daily medication. People love the convenience and if you’re a non-smoker, gummies are the perfect option.

PERKS: Where do you see the industry going in western New York over the next five years?

NEWARK: I hope in five years we are looking at a cannabis industry that is established, that is working, and that is helping our communities create jobs. I want communities to grow side by side right along with the cannabis industry. We can create a great thing amongst us and strengthen our communities with these new opportunities from the cannabis industry. It takes someone to lead the pack and we want to be on the frontlines for our community.

As the legalization of marijuana across the state continues to be a hot topic, one thing remains constant: regulations are certain to be ever-changing as both federal and state governments navigate their way through the industry.  And as JD states, “We are always changing. This industry is just starting and we are pioneers. We’re keeping track of everything the state puts out and we will adapt to any changes as they come along.”
