Baseball is the All-American sport, legendary for bringing people to the stands for hot dogs, popcorn and home-runs. Softball is a direct descendant of baseball with a very few noticeable differences, such as the balls being larger, pitches are done underhand and the diamond is a little smaller. Ellicottville Central School has a fabulous softball diamond that until now, was just missing one thing: a dugout for the teams to sit between innings.
Thanks to the Ellicottville Sports Boosters Club and a variety of local volunteers, that is no longer the case. Over this past weekend, they came together to build dugouts for the softball diamond behind Ellicottville Central’s playground. Great Valley Builders supplied the project with discounted materials, APEX Construction did the concrete pour, J.D. Northrup Construction covered the site work, Dana John Construction is working on the builds, and Chris Woodarek will be handling the metal roofing.
President of the ECS Sports Boosters club, Todd Palmatier said, “We knew the softball field needed a place for the teams to put their equipment and to rest. We wanted to make sure it was done right. We have to thank all the local businesses and community volunteers like the Lady Eagles Head Coach Matt Finn, Eileen Snyder Fin, Sports Booster Club member Karl Northrup, his wife Jill Northrup, Shawn and Heather Lafferty, Mike Andera, Chris Keenan, Chris Mendell, Dave Whitmer, Jon Fisher, Andrew Kruska and the Lafferty and Finn girls who came out to help get the project going and to supply everyone working with hot dogs and drinks while the work was being done.”
Todd stated that the project isn’t going to be totally completed until most likely around summer but that both dugouts are ready to use right now, so the girls will have a great home base for the duration of the 2023 season. Thank you to everyone who made this project possible. Good luck Lady Eagles!
